Wizards of the Coast cancels five projects

Dungeons and Dragons maker Wizards of the Coast has reportedly axed five video game projects.

That’s according to Bloomberg, which reports that the company is ‘scaling back’ its plans for video games. As a result of this shift, less than 15 people are being laid off, but can apparently apply for other roles within Wizards of the Coast.

In a statement, the company insisted that it is “committed to using digital games,” and said that it has “made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games which are strategically aligned with developing our existing brands and those which show promise in expanding or engaging our audience in new ways.”

Previously, Wizards of the Coast described video games as “core” to its future. The company has hired a load of talent from BioWare for developer Archetype, as well as running the newly-rebranded Invoke Studios. That’s on top of a partnership with Larian Studios for Baldur’s Gate 3, which is set to launch in 2023 following a 2020 Early Access release.

The five cancelled game projects were not yet announced though could be some of the many Dungeons and Dragons games in the works that the company alluded to back in 2019.
