Davis, Calif. – Caged students in monkey masks will kick off the new semester by taking their fight for animal rights directly to the Sciences Lecture Hall at the University of California–Davis on Thursday to denounce the school for tormenting primates in experiments. The action comes from Students Opposing Speciesism (SOS), a PETA-backed, youth-led movement for animal liberation.

When:    Thursday, January 26, 11:15 a.m.

Where:    UC-Davis’ Sciences Lecture Hall, near the intersection of Hutchison and Kleiber Hall drives, Davis

“These students are working tirelessly to end horrific experiments on imprisoned monkeys whose skulls are cut open, among other horrific procedures,” says PETA Senior Director Rachelle Owen. “PETA urges UC-Davis to stop killing animals, shut down this cruel laboratory, and switch to modern, animal-free research methods.”

The notorious California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) at UC-Davis imprisons more than 4,000 monkeys, infects them with deadly viruses and painful diseases, traumatizes them, and kills them in vile experiments. Records obtained by PETA show multiple serious cases of cruelty at the CNPRC, including an infant rhesus macaque who died after suffering from heat stress and seven infant rhesus macaques who died after they tried to nurse and ingested dye from marks that had been made on their mothers’ bodies.

SOS shares PETA’s motto: “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.”
