Thomson Reuters, Levio, only Canadian tech firms on the list.
United States-based job site Glassdoor has published its 2023 report for the best 25 places to work in Canada, and the roster is mostly populated by tech companies.
Using company reviews and ratings from current and former employees submitted between October 2021 and October 2022, Glassdoor listed (in order) Google, Roche, QuadReal, Ericsson-Worldwide, and iA Groupe financier as the top five workplaces in Canada.
Returning companies from the previous year’s top 25 list include Google, Apple, and Desjardins.
Specific to tech companies, Google and Ericsson are joined by Microsoft (6th), Salesforce (9th), Accenture (10th), SAP (12th), Schneider Electric (13th), Nokia (14th), Ciena (15th), Levio (16th), Apple (17th), Bell Textron Canada (19th), Intuit (20th), Autodesk (24th), and Thomson Reuters (25th).
While tech has remained the top industry for great employee culture and career growth opportunities, according to Glassdoor, there are only two Canadian-founded tech companies that cracked Glassdoor’s 2023 list for the best 25 places to work in the country: Québec-based digital native consulting firm Levio, as well as Toronto media company Thomson Reuters.
Returning companies from the previous year’s top 25 list include Google, Apple, Desjardins, SAP, Thomson Reuters, and Salesforce, among others. Shopify was included in the list for three consecutive years, from 2017 to 2019, but has not returned since. Shopify took the number one spot in 2017, beating out the likes of Salesforce, Apple, and Ubisoft, which were also in that year’s cohort.
The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards list the best large-scale places to work across Canada, the US, the UK, France, and Germany, with separate lists for each country. To be eligible for being included in the list in Canada, employers must have 1,000 or more employees.

In employees’ company review submissions, they are asked to share their opinions on the pros and cons of their employer, and to provide advice to management. Employees are also asked to rate their satisfaction with their employer overall, among other metrics such as likelihood to recommend their employer to a friend, the employer’s six month-business outlook, and others.
Despite an unstable labour market with mass layoffs across the sector, Glassdoor CEO Christian Sutherland-Wong claimed that the data shows there are still companies focused on building great employee experiences.
“It’s encouraging to see companies doubling down on employee mental health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, competitive benefits and flexible work environments as we head into 2023,” he said.
The non-tech organizations that also made it in Glassdoor’s 2023 roster for the 25 best places to work in Canada are eXp Realty (7th), Mackenzie Investments (11th), Grant Thornton LLP Canada, Sun Life (21st), Nike (22nd), and Hydro-Québec (23rd).
