Dead Space Remake Nearly Didn’t Have A Pause Option, Reveals EA Motive

The creators behind the upcoming Dead Space Remake has revealed that one vital option was nearly given the boot in the upcoming PS5 survival horror revamp: a pause button.

Chatting with Inverse, Joel MacMillan, the Realization Director at EA Motive, revealed that the pause option was nearly eschewed from Dead Space Remake in order to offer a “far more impactful” experience. However, in the end the studio decided to keep it in.

In horror games, you can pause and you have a moment of safety there. You can take a breath. And I think you get a reprieve from that. It deflates some of the tension. But with persistent online games, you’re playing with dozens of other people, and you can’t just pause everybody’s game.

I think removing that as a feature would make horror games far more impactful — You would truly feel like you’re never actually safe.

.He added that he prefers to have the ability to pause the action as “I still tend to get jittery when I play these games,” and so it was decided to keep the option in the game.

Speaking in the same interview, MacMillan revealed that the 3D map seen in the 2008 original has been replaced by a 2D version for easier navigation. Dead Space Remake will also feature a New Game Plus option.

Dead Space Remake is set for release on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S on January 27, 2023.
